Prominent figures, including Chief Gani Adams and Senior Advocate Femi Falana, have renewed calls for true federalism and a new constitution to propel Nigeria’s development.
Speaking at the 25th OPC June 12 Lecture in Lagos, Adams emphasized that without restructuring, Nigeria’s progress would be hindered.
Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, stated, “Whether anybody likes it or not, this country will be restructured. And the earlier this is done, the better for all of us.”
He highlighted that restructuring would guarantee peace and security, reduce kidnapping, and enhance governance.
Falana, represented by Wale Adeoye, described the 1999 constitution as a major setback, noting it couldn’t actualize Nigerians’ democratic aspirations.
“This is a major setback for Nigeria, and there is no way we can talk about stability, progress, and development,” he said.
Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin emphasized ballot integrity and free choice, urging President Bola Tinubu to declare MKO Abiola a past President of Nigeria posthumously. Debo Adeniran suggested renaming June 12 to MKO Abiola Day.
The event saw consensus among attendees, including leaders from the Igbo and Arewa communities, on the need for true federalism and restructuring.
Chief Sunday Udeh stated, “Igbo community aligns with the call for true federalism and restructuring; it is the way forward.”
The renewed calls for restructuring reflect a growing demand for systemic change to address Nigeria’s challenges.
As Adams noted, “Nigeria is going through various crises today because some leaders are stubbornly against restructuring.”
The theme of the lecture was titled: “June 12 as Catalyst for National Development: True Federalism and Nigeria’s Integration”.
