
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has announced that the 10th Senate has passed 96 bills out of 844 introduced within its first two years.
Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly to celebrate 2025 Democracy Day, Akpabio highlighted the Senate’s remarkable productivity.
“From its inception, the 10th Senate demonstrated a renewed vigor for addressing the country’s complex challenges through purposeful legislation,” Akpabio stated.
He noted that 107 bills are currently at the committee stage, 206 bills are awaiting first reading, and 409 bills have advanced to second reading.
Akpabio revealed that 52 of the passed bills have been assented to by the President, becoming enforceable laws. Some of the notable bills include the National Education Fund, Local Government Autonomy Bill, Regional Development Commission, Tax Reform, and University and Tertiary Institutions bills.
The Senate President emphasized the upper chamber’s cooperation with the executive arm, noting that 26 Executive bills have been acted upon.
“These executive-sponsored legislations address key policy areas and benefit from the Senate’s thorough review and refinement before passage.”
Akpabio also highlighted the Senate’s commitment to public trust, stating that 18 petitions out of 80 received have been fully adopted, providing redress, transparency, and institutional accountability.
“This is a testimony to public trust in the institution,” he said.
