Only 15 governors have granted legislative autonomy – Gov. Lalong

PATRICK ABANG, Calabar –

The Chairman of Northern Governor’s Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong has said only fifteen states governors have so far granted legislative and judicial autonomy in Nigeria.

Lalong who doubles as Chairman of Former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly Conference disclosed this in Calabara during a valedictory session in honour of late Mike Ogar former Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly at the State Assembly complex.

He said the demise of the respected and loving personality is no doubt a tremendous loss to the immediate family and the entire people of Cross River State and the country at large.

“As a public servant, he did his best to promote good governance, democracy, and development at times. Little wonder, his tenure as speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly was very productive as he worked hard to ensure transformation of the state”

According to the Plateau State Governor, during his term in office, he was a strong member of the Nigerian Speaker’s Forum and after office he remained an active member of the Conference of Former Speakers of House’s of Assembly in Nigeria.

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly Eteng William said Cross River State House of Assembly will always remember him for the unique , purposeful and dynamic leadership, he introduced in the state legislative.

Eteng described the former lawmaker as fearless, transparent, honest, humble and deligent.

Governor Ben Ayade in his remarks, described the late Mike Ogar as a detribalised and highly committed so of Cross River State who bestride the political scene as a Colossus.

The Governor said the former Speaker made robust contribution to the legislature process and welded a bond that ensure a harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislature arms of government in Cross River State.

According to Ayade said “Today is a very sad day for our state, Mike Ogar at 63 is a very tender age, Mike was a system person,,

In his remarks, the former Governor Donald Duke said there are few noble in spirit as our friend and brother, Mike was more of political and public service acumen that we know.

Over forty former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly attended the valedictory session of the late lawmaker including National Assembly members.
