Super Eagles of Nigeria
Victor Osimhen was in electric form, netting a sensational hat-trick as the Super Eagles soared to a 4-0 demolition of Benin Republic in their final group-stage game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Frank Onyeka added a fourth to seal the emphatic win in Uyo, but despite the dominant performance, Nigeria fell just short of clinching an automatic ticket to the global showpiece.
South Africa’s 3-0 victory over Rwanda ensured they stayed top of the group with 18 points — one ahead of Nigeria, who finished second on 17.
Although direct qualification slipped through their fingers, the Super Eagles remain in contention.
With 17 points, Nigeria is now in a strong position to advance as one of the best group runners-up, keeping their World Cup hopes alive via the play-off route.
