Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday launched its National Convention Zoning Committee (NCZC) to establish the zoning framework for its national leadership positions ahead of the November national convention.
During the committee’s inauguration in Abuja, acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum urged members to prioritize fairness, inclusivity, and the party’s vision for a stronger future.
He described the committee as the cornerstone for shaping the PDP’s next leadership, emphasizing that its decisions would influence the party’s ability to serve Nigerians and succeed in elections.
Damagum highlighted the challenges of Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape, noting that despite recent leadership transitions and defections, the PDP remains a pivotal force in the nation’s democracy.
He stressed the need for a National Working Committee (NWC) that is representative, visionary, and capable of inspiring trust and mobilizing support.
“Our zoning process must embody fairness, equity, and strategic foresight to foster unity, reward loyalty, and position us for electoral success,” Damagum said.
He encouraged the committee to make decisions that restore hope and confidence, balancing loyalty with competence and ensuring that chosen leaders reflect the PDP’s values.
He also underscored the importance of deputy roles, citing his own rise from deputy national chairman (North) to acting national chairman as an example of how preparation and understanding of service can lead to impactful leadership.
PDP National Organising Secretary Umar Bature described the committee’s role as critical, laying the foundation for the party’s future and revitalizing its spirit.
He expressed confidence that the committee would deliver a fair report within two weeks.
Senate Minority Leader Sen. Abba Morro urged the committee to learn from the fallout of the 2023 election zoning decisions, warning against further experimentation.
“We must get it right this time,” he emphasized.
Representing the PDP Board of Trustees, former Minister of Women Affairs Chief Inna Shiroma voiced support for decisions that advance the party, urging the committee to act carefully to help the PDP address Nigeria’s challenges.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, pledged the governors’ support, assuring that they prioritize national unity and effective leadership recruitment over personal interests.
He expressed optimism that the committee would pave the way for a victorious PDP in 2027.
Committee Chairman and Bayelsa Governor Duoye Diri, in his acceptance speech, acknowledged the weight of the task and committed to a consultative, inclusive process to deliver a fair zoning formula.
The event was attended by governors including Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Caleb Muftwang of Plateau, alongside members of the PDP National Working Committee and Board of Trustees.
