Commissioner for Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries in Plateau State, Dr. Sunday Akpa
By CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos–
The newly sworn-in Commissioner for Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries in Plateau State, Dr. Sunday Akpa, has vowed to introduce structured policies to enhance productivity and accountability in the livestock sector.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Akpa emphasized the need to shift from subsistence livestock farming to a commercial model that maximizes economic benefits.
He noted that agricultural policies in Nigeria have historically prioritized crop production, leaving livestock development largely unstructured.
“We must change this mindset and recognize livestock farming as a viable business. Strengthening the entire value chain will ensure that farmers reap maximum benefits,”he stated.
Akpa reaffirmed his commitment to financial transparency, drawing from his 35-year experience in civil service. He stressed that adherence to public service financial regulations would prevent mismanagement.
“Public funds must be properly accounted for. When financial rules are strictly followed, mismanagement becomes technically impossible,” he said.
On security, the commissioner underscored the connection between peace and economic stability, urging citizens to support the government’s peacebuilding efforts.
“Without security, development suffers. Even personal productivity declines when people live in fear. Stability is the foundation for progress,” he added.
Meanwhile, the President-elect of the Bache (Rukuba) Cultural Development Association (BCDA), Ati Ezekiel Ayu Angai, has commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for appointing Akpa, describing it as a recognition of the Bache people’s contributions to Plateau State.
“We appreciate the governor for this thoughtful appointment. Dr. Akpa is known for his diligence and integrity, and we trust he will add value to governance,”Angai said.
He urged the Bache community to support Akpa in his new role, reaffirming their commitment to the administration.
Akpa, a retired Director of Veterinary Services and former Permanent Secretary, previously served as the National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA). He hails from Kisaloi in Rukuba Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area.
