In his continued efforts towards decongesting the correctional centers over the years, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has once again secured the release of another 60 inmates in Sokoto State.
The freed inmates including a woman were serving various jail terms for different offences, some which include capital and others unintentional.
The annual gesture through the Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko free Legal service Foundation was geared towards giving inmates sense of belonging, second chance to become better citizens and another opportunity to reunite with their families in the festive period.
While calling on wealthy individuals to reciprocate same, Senator Wamakko represented by Barrister Bashir Mu’azu Jodi decried that its disheartening to hear the stories that led to the imprisonment of some of the convicts.
Speaking earlier, the State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nasir Muhammad Binji, represented by one of the Directors in the Ministry, Barrister Mustapha Abubakar said despite some of the inmates were docked because of their misdeeds, others were incarcerated for unintentional offences.
The State Attorney, Barrister Binji further appealed to the freed inmates to avoid whatever mistakes that will take them back to the custodial centres subsequently.
Binji further commended Wamakko’s leadership style and the unwavering commitment of the Senator as a dependable benefactor to the less- privileged at all times.
A statement by Senator Wamakko’s spokesperson, Bashar Abubakar quoted the foundation’s secretary, Barrister Abdulhamid Zubairu, as saying each of the inmates were given transport fare to be able to go home and reunite with their respective families.
“WwThe gesture to the freed inmates by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko was meant to enable them celebrate Sallah festival with their families and charged them to be good ambassadors while in society”.
Responding to the gesture, one of the freed inmates, Garba Usman, thanked the Senator for the gesture and prayed to Allah the Almighty to reward him abundantly.
