Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has appealed to the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, to reconsider the closure of the Onitsha Main Market, citing the severe economic hardship being faced by traders and their families.
The appeal was made by the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, in a statement issued by the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu.
Governor Soludo had earlier ordered the closure of the market for one week on Tuesday following what the state government described as the continued observance of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) sit-at-home directive by traders.
Mbata said Ohanaeze understands the concerns of the state government, noting that the action was taken to promote order, ensure public safety and support the long-term development of the state.
However, he urged the governor to take into account the economic realities confronting thousands of traders whose livelihoods depend on the daily operation of the market.
According to him, an early reopening of the market would help reduce the hardship on residents, especially in the face of prevailing economic challenges affecting businesses and households across the state.
“We commend Governor Soludo for his purposeful leadership and the administration’s efforts at transforming Anambra.
“In the spirit of inclusive governance, we request engagement with market leaders and stakeholders through dialogue to reach an amicable resolution.
“Ohanaeze remains confident in the governor’s commitment to Ndi Anambra and pledges continued support for peace, progress and development,” he said.
