Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged President Bola Tinubu to take a firm diplomatic stand against U.S. President Donald Trump, following a statement allegedly threatening military action against Nigeria.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi described Trump’s reported comment as “a profound disrespect to our authority,” calling it a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.
Gumi advised the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador to demand a formal retraction of the threat. Should Washington fail to comply, he said, Nigeria must consider severing diplomatic relations.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” Gumi declared.
The outspoken cleric added that Nigeria has other strategic partners across the globe and should not be overly reliant on any single foreign power for its growth or security needs.
“Nigeria has alternatives in economic and military alliances,” he noted, urging the government to safeguard national dignity through decisive diplomacy.
