Wave of defections sweeping across Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections has reached Kano, as more than 1,000 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement have crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass defection, which took place at the Fine Time Events Centre in Kano, adds to the growing list of opposition members joining the ruling party in recent weeks.
Many of the defectors cited President Bola Tinubu’s reform efforts and the grassroots empowerment initiatives of Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, as key motivations for their switch.
In a statement released by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, the leader of the defectors, Aminu Minjibir, said they had worked tirelessly under the Kwankwasiyya banner but had grown disillusioned with the NNPP’s performance in Kano.
> “We gave our all to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, but the NNPP has failed to deliver meaningful change to the people of Kano. The APC has shown genuine commitment to progress,” Minjibir said.
Receiving the new members, Senator Jibrin hailed their decision as a wise and strategic move, saying it reflected the growing appeal of the APC across the country.
> “You have made the right choice by joining the APC—the largest party in Africa. The NNPP’s influence is waning, while the APC continues to deliver on development and human empowerment,” Jibrin stated.
The Kano defection marks another milestone in the APC’s ongoing political consolidation, as the party continues to attract defectors from opposition camps ahead of what analysts predict will be a fiercely contested 2027 election season.
