Senate on Tuesday has approved two significant bills earlier passed by the House of Representatives — the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill and the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill.
During plenary, Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC–Ekiti), moved the motion for concurrence, which was seconded by Sen. Olalere Oyewumi (PDP–Osun).
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), these two bills were part of a batch of six brought forward for consideration. However, not all made it through.
The Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Oke-Igbo, Ondo State (Establishment) Bill was put on hold, following the Federal Government’s current policy of suspending the creation of new tertiary institutions for the next seven years.
Similarly, the Criminal Code Act (Amendment) Bill was stepped down and sent back to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further examination. Lawmakers raised concerns over sensitive aspects of the bill, particularly those relating to rape, defilement, and abortion.
Following the passage of the two approved bills, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lower chamber for its diligence.
“I congratulate our colleagues in the House of Representatives for their contributions and the painstaking manner in which they scrutinised these bills,” Akpabio said, noting that the legislation would enhance road safety and raise awareness around public health and nutrition.
