Manchester United secured a narrow but valuable 1–0 victory over Everton on Tuesday night, thanks to a second-half goal from substitute Benjamin Sesko in a tightly contested encounter.
The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute when Sesko latched onto a swift attacking move and calmly finished to hand United the lead. It proved to be the clearest chance of the match and the visitors made it count.
Before the breakthrough, both sides struggled to create clear openings. United recorded 11 shots, with four on target, while Everton had more attempts overall with 14 efforts, though only three troubled the goalkeeper. Possession was closely shared, with United holding a slight edge at about 52 percent.
Set-pieces played a major role in the latter stages, as Everton won eight corners and repeatedly delivered balls into the box in search of an equaliser. United earned five corners of their own, but spent much of the closing period defending under pressure.
Goalkeeper Senne Lammens was instrumental in preserving the lead, making two crucial saves in the final 15 minutes, including a sharp close-range stop that denied the hosts a late leveller.
The contest was also marked by physicality, with 21 fouls committed, disrupting the flow of play and preventing either team from establishing sustained dominance. The game was scrappy in spells, with momentum frequently halted by stoppages.
For caretaker manager Michael Carrick, the victory extends United’s steady progress and pushes the club into the top four of the Premier League standings.
While the performance lacked flair, it was disciplined and efficient when it mattered most. One goal, a clean sheet, and three vital points ensured United left with maximum reward from a hard-fought contest.
United will now look to build on the result as they turn their attention to their next league fixture.
