
Wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu Ahmed

The wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu Ahmed, has encouraged women to adopt child spacing, citing its numerous benefits for both mothers and children.
She emphasized that child spacing is crucial in the current economic climate, allowing families to better care for their children and plan for their future.
“Child spacing is very important for both the mother and her children, because when you are not healthy, you cannot give birth to healthy children,” Hajiya Fatima said during the commemoration of Safe Motherhood Day, International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, and International Day of Midwives and Child Health Week 2025.
The governor’s wife, who was represented By Barrister Saadatu Yunusa, highlighted the significance of these events, stating, “Each of these commemorations serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to protect, uplift, and invest in the well-being of mothers and children—the very foundation of our communities.”
She emphasized the importance of equity in maternal healthcare, saying, “This year’s themes resound with urgency and purpose; Safe Motherhood Day 2025 calls for ‘Equity in Maternal Healthcare: Leaving No Mother Behind.'”
Hajiya Fatima appreciated development partners for their support, saying, “These successes would not have been possible without the steadfast support of our development partners.
“We are deeply thankful for their continued technical assistance, funding, and advocacy, which have strengthened our health systems and reached the most vulnerable among us.”
The governor’s wife concluded by celebrating the strength and resilience of Sokoto women, saying, “We will continue to celebrate the strength and resilience of the women of Sokoto State—our mothers, sisters, and daughters—who continue to nurture families and uplift communities against all odds.”
The Chief Medical Director of Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Hajiya Hadiza Tore, revealed that over 500 obstetric fistula patients have been treated in Sokoto this year.
She emphasized the importance of education, advocacy, and awareness creation in ending fistula cases, highlighting the role of development partners in promoting family planning in the state.
Hajiya Tore commended organizations such as TCI, Challenge Initiative, and Development Communication Networks (DEVCOM) for their efforts in entrenching family planning in Sokoto State.
