Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu has visited Dundaye community where a boat mishap claimed the lives of additional five persons over the weekend.
During the visit on Wednesday, the governor announced a donation of N30 million to the affected families.
Under the Governor’s largesse, the bereaved families will get N15 million, while those who survived the incident will as well get N15 million naira.
The governor also announced plans by the state government to provide motorized boats and life jackets to the people of the riverine communities to ensure safety while using the river.
“Let me warn the captains of canoes in this area to desist from recklessness while ferrying people across the river.
” I was reliably told that the captain of the ill-fated canoe was driving it recklessly, so please let us stop doing such callous acts,” he warned
The governor also called on the people living in the riverine areas to take the full advantage of water around them and engage in irrigation activities.
Continuing, the governor said such actions would bolster food security of the state and the nation as a whole.
He assured the people of his administration’s readiness to embark on both wet and dry seasons farming.
”We have already started making farming activities attractive through the donation of fertilizer and other insecticides to our peasants.
“We are also introducing plausible measures to ensure that agricultural mechanization thrive in the state,” he added.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa added that a special prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
