Spotify has named Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Fola and South African Afro House maestro Thakzin as the latest talents under its RADAR Africa initiative, spotlighting their transformative impact on Sub-Saharan Africa’s music landscape.
In a statement released on Thursday, Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the platform’s dedication to nurturing emerging artists.
“Spotify RADAR is more than a platform—it’s a springboard for groundbreaking talent shaping the future of African music,” Okumu said.
“We are committed to empowering local artists and connecting them with global audiences, celebrating the rich diversity of sounds from Lagos to Johannesburg.”
Okumu praised Fola and Thakzin as “exceptional artists who embody the essence of RADAR.”
She added, “By amplifying their stories, we aim to inspire countless creators across Africa to pursue their dreams and reach new heights.”
Fola, born Folarin Odunlami, rose to prominence through his captivating social media freestyles, blending Afrobeats with heartfelt storytelling. His debut EP, *_What A Feeling_*, featuring the hit “Who Does That” with Bella Shmurda, paved the way for collaborations with artists like BNXN, Magixx, and BhadBoi OML.
Reflecting on his journey, Fola said, “Every opportunity feels like a gift, especially coming from where I do. I want my music to resonate deeply with fans, letting them feel and share something meaningful. I hope listeners see this as the start of something extraordinary.”
Meanwhile, Thakzin, hailing from Ivory Park, Johannesburg, has carved a niche in Afro House with his innovative sound, influenced by jazz, kwaito, and traditional African percussion.
His 2023 track “The Magnificent Dance” and a viral remix of DJ Kent’s “Horns In The Sun” have earned him acclaim from global icons like Black Coffee and Laurent Garnier.
“My music is rooted in African spirituality and the healing power of rhythm,” Thakzin shared. “Growing up with my father’s keyboard melodies, I’ve crafted a sound that blends harmony and percussion to create an immersive experience.”
Spotify’s RADAR Africa continues to champion the continent’s diverse musical voices, offering a global stage for artists like Fola and Thakzin to shine.
