The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, has assured the public that during the 10th Assembly, there won’t be ‘sleeping lawmakers.’

He stated this during an interview with journalists, at the VIP 9 of the Government House, Bauchi.

Responding to a question on the 9th Assembly’s relationship with the media in the State, he said: “Honestly, I will have to commend the press. The press through my media aide, Abdul Burra, you people are wonderful and you contributed in making the 9th Assembly popular and very productive.

“You were always checking on us, you didn’t allow us to rest. I can remember that there was a time that there was a report from one online media where he brought out members that he termed ‘sleeping members’ and ‘active members’. So, this time around, inshallah, you will not get sleeping members.”

He assured that with the majority of the members of the 10th Assembly now from the PDP compared to the last Assembly, the lawmakers will do more by performing their legislative duties effectively.

According to him, “I have interacted with the new members at various fora and they believe we have capable and committed members and I believe we will surpass the 105 bulls we passed during the 9th Assembly.”

Suleiman stated that during the 9th Assembly, there was a very good rapport between the legislature and the executive pointing out that assuring that so it will be in the 10th Assembly.

“There was mutual cooperation and understanding and now, it’s the same Governor, the same Speaker, though with some different members, but we hope to have more collaborations and more synergy between the two arms. Without synergy and collaboration, definitely, there can never be progress and development in the State,” he said.

Asked how he feels having made history by being the first Speaker in the State to have been elected for a second term, he said: “I feel very happy because this was something (position) that I contested for, so I am happy.

“We’re set to take the Assembly to the next level and we have lined up some agendas that we will pursue. The first one is that, as a leader, I will make sure that I maintain an open-door policy where each and every member of the House will have access to me at any time.

“The most important thing I think we’re going to do in this Assembly is the issue of rebranding the Assembly. The 9th Assembly was accused variously because…though I know they were false accusations, but this time around, were going to be more serious than before.”
