President Bola Tinubu has committed to transforming Nigeria’s transport sector into a key driver of the nation’s economy.
Speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, for the 2024/2025 academic session, Tinubu outlined his vision for a revitalized sector powered by skilled professionals.
Represented by the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, the President’s remarks were shared with journalists in Abuja on Sunday through a statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Jibril Alkali. Tinubu praised the Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD) for its progress since its inception, emphasizing its role in advancing education, training, and research tailored to the transport industry.
“The university is pivotal to our goal of producing world-class transportation professionals to address the critical shortage of expertise, particularly in our revitalized railway system,” Tinubu stated. He noted that FUTD’s matriculation of 529 students for the 2024/2025 session marks a significant step toward establishing the institution as a leading hub for transportation education in Nigeria and Africa.
Tinubu highlighted that FUTD will equip students with specialized knowledge across all modes of transportation, leveraging policy, law, and industry practices to position the sector as a source of national pride. “We aim to produce graduates who can compete globally and drive the transport sector to new heights,” he said, adding that the institution addresses the urgent need for targeted education and research in the field.
The President urged the matriculating students to seize the unique opportunity offered by Nigeria’s only specialized transportation university. “You are fortunate to be part of this pioneering institution. Work hard to make your university, your parents, and Nigeria proud,” he encouraged.
FUTD’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Umar Katsayal, underscored the university’s mission to protect and sustain government investments in the transport sector while addressing the industry’s human capacity gaps.
He emphasized the institution’s focus on supporting Nigeria’s modernized railway system through specialized education and research. Katsayal also acknowledged the contributions of CCECC Nigeria Limited, the firm behind the Lagos-Kano Railway Modernization Project, for supporting FUTD’s development as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
