Military troops from the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) successfully repelled armed herders and confiscated an automatic rifle in Benue State.
The Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, shared this update in a press release issued to journalists on Friday in Makurdi.
According to Zubairu, on Wednesday, during a routine patrol near Mbakyior Outpost and Agidi Community in Gwer East Local Government Area, the troops retrieved an AK-47 rifle equipped with a magazine.
The weapon was found at a suspected crossing point frequently used by armed herders in the Mbakyior community.
“Upon spotting the approaching troops, the herders attempted to flee and fired at the soldiers to evade capture. The OPWS team promptly returned fire, compelling the attackers to retreat and abandon the area,” Zubairu explained.
A subsequent search of the location led to the recovery of the AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition left behind by the fleeing herders.
The statement added that security forces have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further incursions, boost public confidence, and enable residents to resume their daily socio-economic activities.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, praised the troops for their determination, professionalism, and disciplined response during the operation. He encouraged them to stay vigilant, proactive, and responsive to intelligence provided by local communities.
Gara reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and security across Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States.
