Federico Valverde ran riot as Real Madrid beat Manchester City 3–0 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.
The Uruguayan’s first-half hat-trick left the English champions shell-shocked.
All the damage came before the break. Even the opener began with a long ball from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
In the 20th minute, the Uruguayan raced onto the ball, rounded City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and calmly slotted into an empty net.
Seven minutes later, City were behind again.
Vinícius Júnior drove down the left and slipped a pass into Valverde’s path.
The midfielder timed his run perfectly and drilled a low finish into the corner to double Madrid’s lead.
Three minutes before halftime, Valverde completed his hat-trick.
Brahim Díaz floated a clever ball into the box, and Valverde controlled before smashing a powerful volley past Donnarumma. The Bernabéu erupted as Madrid took complete control of the tie.
City dominated possession after the break but struggled to create clear chances. Madrid defended well and remained dangerous on the counter.
They even had a chance to add a fourth when Vinícius stepped up for a penalty, but Donnarumma kept the scoreline at 3–0.
By then, the result was all but settled. Valverde’s explosive first-half display had put Madrid firmly in command ahead of the second leg.
