Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding health insurance coverage across the country following a high-level visit by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Ohiri, on Friday, received a delegation led by the WHO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Pavel Ursu, where both parties discussed strategies to deepen universal health coverage and increase the number of Nigerians enrolled in health insurance schemes.
The engagement, which was shared on the NHIA’s official X handle, highlighted the authority’s ongoing efforts to widen access to healthcare and drive reforms aimed at improving insurance penetration nationwide.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Ohiri stressed the importance of strong partnerships in strengthening the health system.
“We need support to reach more people,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr. Ursu assured the NHIA of continued backing from the global health body, noting that cooperation remains key to improving healthcare delivery.
“Collaboration helps improve access for everyone,” he added.
The visit underscores the shared commitment of both organizations to building a more inclusive and resilient health insurance system that ensures quality healthcare services for all Nigerians.
