FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike cast his vote during the LG election in Rivers State
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed his approval of the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State after voting at Polling Unit 007, Ward 9, in Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, on Saturday.
He credited President Bola Tinubu for ensuring the elections adhered to constitutional requirements, highlighting their importance for grassroots governance.
“The Supreme Court’s ruling against caretaker committees means that without elected officials, local governments cannot access Federation Account funds,” Wike explained to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He emphasized that the elections would allow local governments to receive direct funding and operate effectively once the emergency rule ends by September 18.
“With the governor and state House of Assembly restored, these elections will strengthen local governance,” he added.
Wike praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for its organization and was impressed by the voter turnout.
“I’ve seen a massive turnout here in Rumuepirikom, and reports confirm strong participation in rural areas as well,” he noted.
He expressed confidence that elected officials would be sworn in by day’s end, restoring full legitimacy to local government authorities.
Dismissing fears of the elections being nullified, Wike stressed their legal and transparent nature.
“This is a lawful election where people are freely voting for their chosen representatives,” he said, urging citizens to support the process to ensure robust governance and development at the grassroots level.
