Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called for greater transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance.
Governor Zulum, who was the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker at the 2024 ZIK Annual Award Lecture in Abuja, was represented by the Chief Whip of the Senate and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Sen. Mohammed Tahir Monguno.
The lecture, held at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, is an annual event organized to honor Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
This year’s theme, “The Nigeria Governance Model: Prospects and Challenges,” focused on addressing governance issues and proposing solutions for sustainable development.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Governor Zulum, Sen. Monguno underscored the critical role governance plays in eradicating poverty, driving economic growth, and enhancing human development.
“Citizens must demand transparency, accountability, and responsiveness from governments and institutions,” he said. “These principles are essential for building trust between the government and the people, which in turn fosters economic prosperity and societal progress.”
He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that governance goes beyond economic growth by prioritizing respect for human rights and equitable access to essential services such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and clean water.
Sen. Monguno praised Governor Zulum’s leadership, particularly his resilience and effectiveness in tackling insurgency and responding to the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri.
“Governor Zulum is a model of good governance in Nigeria. His commitment to responsive and efficient leadership continues to inspire,” he added.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Hon. Bukar Tijani; the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar; and other senior officials and stakeholders.
