Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has reiterated its strong commitment to fostering voluntary tax compliance, marking one year since the launch of the country’s extensive tax reform program.
In a statement commemorating the anniversary, the NRS emphasized that taxpayer education remains a fundamental element in sustaining the positive outcomes achieved since the tax system overhaul began.
The reforms introduced over the past year—such as simplifying tax procedures, eliminating multiple taxation, and upgrading digital tax platforms—have notably enhanced the ease of paying taxes nationwide.
The NRS reported significant progress in taxpayer registration and filing rates during this period.
“Voluntary compliance is central to our approach. After one year, we have observed encouraging growth in taxpayer registration and filing, but ongoing public education is vital to deepen these achievements,” the statement noted.
The agency highlighted that the reforms have streamlined tax processes, lowered compliance costs, and broadened the tax base without adding extra burdens on compliant taxpayers.
Digital advancements, including an improved e-filing portal and an integrated tax administration system, have minimized human interaction in tax processes, thereby reducing opportunities for corruption.
Despite these successes, the NRS acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in integrating informal sector operators and small businesses into the tax framework.
To tackle these issues, the service has intensified nationwide awareness campaigns, workshops, and media outreach to enhance public understanding of tax responsibilities and the importance of tax revenue for national development.
The agency stressed that taxpayer education must be an ongoing effort.
“Taxpayer education is not a one-time event but a continuous process. When citizens are aware of their rights and duties, they are more likely to comply willingly, fostering a stronger and more transparent revenue system,” the statement added.
The NRS urged individuals, businesses, and professional organizations to support the reforms and pledged to uphold transparency, accountability, and efficiency in tax administration while protecting compliant taxpayers from undue harassment.
Looking ahead, the service promised further innovations and improved service delivery as Nigeria advances its goals of economic diversification and fiscal sustainability.
