A devastating fire at Birch By Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, India
A festive night in Goa turned tragic after a midnight fire tore through a popular nightclub in Arpora, leaving at least 23 people dead, according to multiple Indian media reports.
Local outlets, including The Indian Express, reported that most of the victims were staff members who were still inside the building when the fire erupted. Police confirmed that all bodies were recovered from the scene in the early hours of Sunday.
Authorities believe the inferno was triggered by an explosion in the club’s kitchen. Goa’s police chief, quoted by the PTI news agency, said initial findings point to “a gas cylinder explosion” as the likely cause of the blaze.
He added that investigations were underway to determine whether safety protocols were ignored.
It remains unclear whether others sustained injuries or if any patrons were inside when the fire started.
The incident happened in Arpora, a bustling coastal town in North Goa known for its energetic nightlife and steady influx of both local and international tourists. With December marking peak tourist season in India’s smallest state, the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community and raised renewed concerns about fire safety in hospitality establishments.
Authorities say updates will be provided as rescue and identification efforts continue.
