Cross River State Government has announced a 20-day Christmas and New Year holiday for all civil and public servants, giving workers a rare extended break to fully immerse themselves in the state’s festive season.
The directive was contained in an official circular referenced GO/HOS/4/Vol.II1/277 and signed by the Head of Service, Mr. Orok Okon. According to the circular, workers—except those on essential duties—are to proceed on leave from December 15, 2025, to January 5, 2026.
“The approval is to enable Civil/Public Servants fully participate in the Christmas festivities within the State,” the circular stated.
While the government encourages a full embrace of the holiday spirit, it made it clear that critical services must remain active.
“However, officers on essential duties are hereby exempted from this leave and are expected to remain at their duty posts to ensure continuous delivery of critical public services,” it added.
Permanent Secretaries and departmental heads have also been instructed to ensure that all staff members are properly informed and comply with the directive.
The holiday period aligns with the world-famous Carnival Calabar, the highlight of the state’s festive lineup. This year marks the 20th edition of the colourful street parade, which began in 2005 under former Governor Donald Duke and has since grown into Africa’s biggest street party.
With the extended break, the state is expected to witness a significant boost in participation, tourism, and economic activity throughout the festive season.
