Many residents of Makurdi, Benue State capital have been rendered homeless and are restless following heavy down pour in the city and its environment.
It rained heavily from the early hours of Friday with heavy wind for several hours.
The rain brought down houses, fences and destroyed property of the residents of Makurdi worth millions of naira.
Greater part of the city was affected by the torrential downpour but those at the Idye, Wurukum, Akpehe, Achusa and Kucha Utebe along Gboko road among others were majorly affected.
A lot of residential houses as well as business premises were affected as people’s property including food stuff got soaked in the water.
The office of the former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council, Ben Mngutyo was one of the structures that was submerged.
Commenting on the incident, Mngutyo, who is a former Minority Leader at the Benue State House of Assembly and publisher of the News Telescope Newspaper, lamented over the level destruction caused by the rain in the city.
The former lawmaker told NATIONAL ACCORD that the effect of the heavy down pour could not be easily overcome as some people’s businesses have collapsed completely.
Mngutyo urged the people to heed to government advice and avoid blocking or building on water channels for easy flow of water.
In Wurukum market, most traders were lamenting the loses occasioned by the heavy down pour as their goods were soaked and destroyed.
A resident and landlord in Makurdi, Mr. Joshua Ubee also lamented the havoc caused by the rain, saying that not only his fence collapsed, most of his property in all the rooms were soaked and others destroyed.
The greater population of Makurdi residents were seeing drying their beddings and other valuables that cannot be destroyed easily.
