Iran and Israel have sharply disagreed over employing diplomacy to resolve Iran’s nuclear program at the UN Security Council.
Iran’s Ambassador to the UN, Amir Iravani, emphasized his country’s commitment to diplomacy, saying, “Iran continues to believe that a diplomatic resolution to nuclear and sanction issues is possible.”
In contrast, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon warned that diplomacy with Iran had failed, accusing Tehran of using diplomacy as cover to advance its nuclear weapons program.
“We are often told that diplomacy must be given a chance, it was given every chance, every round, every channel, every deadline. But so far, it has failed,” Danon said.
The US, UK, and European Union have urged Iran to return to the negotiation table and renounce its nuclear program.
The UK Ambassador, Barbara Woodward, welcomed the ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump but stressed that “the situation remains extremely fragile” ¹ ².
UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo highlighted the importance of diplomacy, saying the fragile ceasefire provides “an opportunity to avoid a catastrophic escalation and achieve a peaceful resolution of the Iran nuclear issue.” The EU has also emphasized that “a lasting solution to the Iranian nuclear issue can only be through a negotiated deal, not military action”
