The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has declared Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, wanted in connection with alleged offenses including rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.
In a statement posted on its official Instagram account, NAPTIP announced the declaration, saying: “WANTED BY NAPTIP. Darlington Okoye, aka Speed Darlington, is wanted in connection with alleged offences including rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.
“Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts is urged to contact NAPTIP immediately.”
The declaration follows Speed Darlington’s failure to honor multiple summons for questioning related to a viral Instagram Live video.
In the video, he made claims that sparked national outrage and condemnation from rights activists and the public.
*Speed Darlington’s response:*
In response to the allegations, Speed Darlington issued a statement denying any wrongdoing and apologizing for any misunderstanding caused by his actions. “Sadly, what was meant to be a joke has been blown out of proportion by persons looking for fault where none exists,” he said.
“Without conceding to any wrongdoing, may I offer my profound apology for any bad blood or misunderstanding my innocuous actions may have caused the online community?”
He insisted that the video was only for clout and entertainment, saying: “To the discerning, the video was only for clout and entertainment… I would never deliberately engage in any activity that contravenes my responsibilities as a role model.”
Speed Darlington also reiterated that he had not sexually assaulted any minors, stating: “I have neither engaged in nor contemplated any acts of sexual predation, sexual violation, or any other untoward behaviour against the opposite sex.”
*NAPTIP’s investigation:*
NAPTIP had summoned Speed Darlington to appear for questioning, referencing the video and other archived clips. The agency insisted that the matter was of urgent national importance and required an urgent response.
Despite being given another opportunity to appear, Speed Darlington failed to show up, leading to NAPTIP’s declaration.
The agency’s investigation is ongoing, and NAPTIP has urged anyone with credible information on Speed Darlington’s whereabouts to contact them immediately.
