Partnership Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) initiated an advocacy visit in Borno State to tackle violent extremism across Nigeria.
Led by Professor Abubakar Mu’azu, a national member of the Human Rights Commission and a Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri, PAVE met with the Borno State Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Maiduguri.
Professor Mu’azu highlighted that despite several institutions being established to control violent extremism since former President Olusegun Obasanjo led administration, results have been minimal due to challenges like funding, commitment, implementation process, and structural framework.
He asserted that until recently the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) initiated and implemented the PAVE project with a view to reduce, manage and control if possible rid the Nigerian society of violent extremism among people and communities or groups in towns and villages.
He solicited HRC’s support for PAVE’s successful implementation.
The Head of Borno State HRC, Barrister Jummai Usman Mshelia, expressed gratitude for the visit and pledged full cooperation, noting PAVE’s project will complement HRC’s efforts for a more peaceful society, especially with elections approaching.
Barrister Mshelia added that the HRC’s door is always open for PAVE’s collaboration to address societal ills.
