Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has announced plans to commence a seven-day warning strike, in protest against what it calls the “unjust dismissal” of local government workers in Emohua.
In a circular dated September 29 and signed by the union’s Secretary, Mr. Sunday Adeniran, NULGE directed all its members across the 23 local government areas to fully comply with the strike, which is set to begin at midnight on September 30, 2025.
> “This action has become inevitable,” Adeniran stated, “in view of the unlawful disengagement and salary denial of our colleagues in Emohua Local Government.”
The decision was reached during the union’s State Executive Congress, which condemned the alleged high-handedness and lack of due process in the termination of the affected workers.
> “All local government employees across Rivers State are hereby directed to withdraw their services effective midnight of September 30, until further notice,” the circular read.
“We urge all branches to show unwavering solidarity. Injustice to one is injustice to all.”
While the union has framed the move as a warning strike, insiders suggest that if no resolution is reached within the seven-day window, a prolonged industrial action may follow.
As tensions mount, observers say the development could paralyze grassroots administration and disrupt public services unless the Rivers State Government and the Emohua council authorities engage swiftly with the union to de-escalate the crisis.
