Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed September 29, 2026, to deliver judgment in a suit seeking a fresh police investigation into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Justice James Omotosho scheduled the date after hearing arguments from Break the Silence Foundation, the group that instituted the case against the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
The respondents were not represented when the matter came up for hearing.
During the proceedings, the court dismissed an application by Samson Obaboye to join the suit, ruling that he failed to show sufficient legal interest in the matter.
The foundation’s lawyer, Tunde Falola, urged the court to grant the reliefs sought, insisting that key aspects of the earlier police investigation were not properly examined.
“The circumstances surrounding his death remain mysterious and deserve public attention,” Falola said.
“As a human rights organisation seeking justice, we believe the police should reopen the investigation,” he added.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and despite an autopsy and ongoing public interest in the case, questions surrounding his death remain unresolved nearly three years later.
