Collapsed building
A three-storey building collapsed at Road B, Federal Housing Estate, along Dr. Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt, leaving one person dead and several others feared trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue teams, including emergency responders, security agencies, and disaster management officials, rushed to the scene to search for survivors. Speaking on the incident, an official said:
“We are here at Peter Odili Road following disturbing news that a three-storey building collapsed around here. That is why we are here and you can see what is happening in the background. We got this information and as a health team, we had to quickly mobilise the ambulances and as much personnel as possible to come for the rescue.”
He added that two severely injured victims had been rescued and taken to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Amairigha Edward Hart, confirmed that one person was pulled out dead while efforts continued to determine the exact number of people trapped.
Hart blamed the collapse on the use of substandard materials and failure by some developers to follow approved building plans.
He noted that the latest incident came barely 48 hours after another building collapse in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The commissioner called for stricter regulation of the construction sector, stronger collaboration with professional bodies, and tougher measures against quack builders.
