The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has organized a workshop in Monrovia, Liberia, to advance regional cooperation in medical evaluation, harmonising immunisation days, and creating a regional procurement system for health commodities.
The three-day workshop was declared opened on Monday by Liberia’s Assistant Minister of Health, Dr. Gorbee Logan, who stressed the vital role of regional solidarity in addressing cross-border health threats.
Dr. Logan highlighted Liberia’s priorities including stronger surveillance and lab networks, pooled procurement of medicines, greater investment in health worker training, and improved regional referral systems.
ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia, Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, emphasised that citizen wellbeing is central to ECOWAS transformation.
She called for stronger collaboration among countries, better food and water hygiene, school nutrition initiatives, and the scientific development of Africa’s traditional medicine.
The workshop reaffirmed WAHO’s mission to strengthen health systems and foster collective action across ECOWAS Member States.
Besides Dr. Gorbee LOGAN, the opening ceremony was also attended by the representative of Liberia, Her Excellency Ms. Josephine NKRUMAH.
In another development, a delegation from WAHO, led by its Director General, Dr Melchior Athanase J. C. AÏSSI, took part in the International Conference on Nutrition organised in Cotonou by the Government of the Republic of Benin.

The conference, which held from 27 to 28 September 2025, was aimed at supporting Benin’s National Nutrition Programme
The opening ceremony, which was presided over by His Excellency Mr Patrice Talon, President of the Republic, highlighted Benin’s commitment to strengthening care for mothers and infants during the first 1,000 days of life (from pregnancy to the age of two).

On Sunday 28 September, the WAHO team participated in the donors’ round table, which mobilised approximately 252.6 million US dollars to support the nutrition programme benefiting mothers and infants.
On behalf of WAHO, the Director General expressed strong support for this large-scale programme, particularly for its community health component.
