Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has attributed the persistent wave of defections among Nigerian politicians to the absence of a clear ideological foundation in the nation’s political system.
Makinde made this observation in Ibadan on Thursday during the public presentation of a book titled “Omituntun’s Political Ideology of Seyi Makinde.”
Represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor described the trend as a major challenge that has weakened the political space and eroded consistency in governance.
He explained that his own political philosophy is rooted in service and impact, rather than the pursuit of power for its own sake.
> “It’s not politics for the sake of power, but politics for impact. It’s governance for the good of the people,” Makinde said.
The event’s chairman, Dr. Yemi Farounbi, praised the governor’s leadership style, describing him as “a rare breed of leader who is genuinely committed to public service.”
In his review of the book, Mr. Wale Adewumi said the work captures the essence of a transformational leader and offers valuable lessons for aspiring politicians.
> “The book doesn’t just document policies; it captures the spirit of a leader who governs with integrity, unity, and service—challenging others to lead with the same sense of purpose,” Adewumi stated.
Earlier, the author, Mr. Babatunde Osumah, explained that the publication was written to document and analyse the Omituntun political ideology, which he described as a vision built on renewal, progress, and people-centred governance.
> “Omituntun is not just a slogan; it is a living ideology that continues to shape Oyo State’s journey toward inclusive growth and social justice,” Osumah noted.
He added that through this framework, Governor Makinde has demonstrated leadership qualities worthy of emulation by future administrations.
