Coalition of Northwestern State PDP Support Groups has thrown its weight behind the suspension of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagun, and five others, describing the move as a bold step toward repositioning the party for future success.
In a statement jointly signed by the coalition’s President General, Dr. Haruna Muh’d Ismail Gumel, and Secretary, Barr. Ibrahim Hassan Jibia, and made available to journalists in Kaduna, the group applauded the Senator Anyanwu-led faction for what it called “a timely and courageous decision.”
> “The suspension of the National Chairman, Mr. Damagun, and five others is commendable and timely. Their exit has rekindled hope among our teeming members and supporters nationwide that better days are indeed ahead,” the coalition declared.
The group urged the Acting National Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Abdulkadir, to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to address issues arising from the recent court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention.
They further demanded the immediate constitution of a disciplinary committee to invite the suspended officials, including Damagun, to answer to alleged infractions that have, according to them, deepened the crisis within the party.
Accusing Damagun of deliberately fomenting internal conflicts “for reasons best known to him and his allies,” the coalition welcomed the recent Federal High Court judgment stopping the PDP’s national convention until pending disputes are properly resolved.
> “The judgment once again confirms that not all is well within the PDP. This is a clear signal that we must put our house in order if we truly want to reclaim our rightful place in Nigerian politics,” the statement added.
Pledging full support to Acting National Chairman Muhammad Abdulkadir, the coalition urged him to deploy his wealth of experience to restore fairness and unity within the party.
The group also commended Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP National Secretary, and Mr. Umar Muhammad Bature, the National Organizing Secretary, for what they described as their “courage and sacrifice” in protecting the party from public embarrassment.
In its recommendations, the coalition called for the suspension of all preparations for the Ibadan Elective Convention until internal disputes are resolved. It further suggested that the position of the National Chairman be zoned to the Northwest, allowing stakeholders from the region to select a consensus candidate without interference.
> “If the party genuinely desires a seamless rebirth, it must first reconcile its internal divisions and give every zone a sense of belonging,” the coalition concluded.
