An accident scene
A tragic scene unfolded on the Katsina-Ala highway in Benue State when a multiple-vehicle crash claimed nine lives and left several others badly injured.
Witnesses said a MAN diesel truck with registration number TARABA ARD 967XA was among the vehicles involved in the carnage.
According to authorities, the disaster was sparked when members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Katsina-Ala Branch, allegedly blocked the busy highway, bringing traffic to a standstill and setting the stage for the deadly pileup.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that “the victims were rushed to Toro Hospital Katsina-Ala for treatment, while the deceased bodies were deposited at the General Hospital.”
DSP Edet added that the Command is taking the matter seriously:
“The Benue State Police Command strongly warns against the unlawful obstruction of public highways.”
Three men identified as the alleged masterminds of the blockage—Aja Vanger, Chairman of the Katsina-Ala NURTW branch; Stephen Kahungur; and Saater Vihiga—have been arrested.
“They are currently in custody and will be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation,” the police spokesperson said.
The Command emphasized that highway obstruction is not only illegal but a direct threat to public safety. “Blocking highways is a criminal offence that endangers public safety and will attract decisive legal consequences. Individuals or groups involved in such acts will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.
While expressing sympathy for the victims and their families, the police urged road users and transport operators to prioritize safety, follow traffic rules, and avoid any actions that could put lives at risk. The Command also assured the public that it remains committed to enforcing the law to prevent future tragedies.
