Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced the rehabilitation of two critical transmission lines in the Port Harcourt region, a move expected to strengthen power delivery and improve electricity reliability across Rivers State and neighbouring areas.
In a statement issued on Friday, TCN confirmed that contractors have been formally mobilised following a handover ceremony, clearing the way for reconductoring works on the 38.6-kilometre Afam IPP–Port Harcourt transmission line and the 20.8-kilometre Afam IPP–Elelenwo 132kV double-circuit line.
Speaking at the ceremony, the General Manager of Transmission Services, Mr Ali Sharifai, said the rehabilitation project, scheduled to last 12 months, became necessary due to the age of the existing infrastructure.
“The lines have been in service for many years, and their condition has gradually reduced wheeling capacity, affecting overall transmission efficiency,” Sharifai explained.
Also speaking, the General Manager of Transmission for the Port Harcourt Region, Mr Akpa Emmanuel, described the two lines as vital links in the power value chain, noting that they play a central role in evacuating bulk electricity from the Afam Power Plants into the national grid.
“These lines are critical to ensuring that power generated at Afam is effectively transmitted to consumers,” Emmanuel said. “Once completed, the upgraded lines will significantly enhance the reliability and stability of electricity supply across the region.”
He added that the rehabilitation would translate into improved service delivery, reduced system constraints and stronger support for the growing electricity needs of the Port Harcourt region and its environs.
The project is part of TCN’s ongoing efforts to modernise transmission infrastructure nationwide and ensure a more resilient and efficient power network.
