Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted that he may consider calls to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying consultations are ongoing.
He made the remark on Thursday while receiving members of the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan at his Abuja residence, where the youth group appealed to him to join the race.
Welcoming the delegation, Jonathan commended them for showing concern about Nigeria’s future and described their action as patriotic.
“My children, my brothers, and my sisters, first and foremost, let me welcome you to my office in Abuja here, and thank you for showing interest in your country,” he said.
The former Bayelsa governor, however, noted that seeking the presidency is a serious undertaking, adding, “Yes, you are asking me to come and contest the next elections. The presidential race is not a computer game, but I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely.”
Jonathan also urged young Nigerians to become more active in the democratic process by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards and participating in elections.
He lamented the level of voter apathy in the country, saying Nigeria records one of the lowest voter turnouts in Africa despite its population size.
Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, has largely stayed away from partisan politics since leaving office and has instead focused on election observation missions across the continent.
