Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for increased support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as part of efforts to drive economic growth and job creation in Nigeria.
Obi made this known after holding meetings in London with key stakeholders in the British political and business community, including Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC).
According to Obi, the discussions focused on trade opportunities, economic development and ways to strengthen small businesses across Nigeria.
“Today, I held meetings in London with some stakeholders in British politics and business community, including Lord Jonathan Marland, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC),” Obi stated.
“The discussion with Lord Marland held particular importance as it centred on prospective trade opportunities, economic advancement, and the promotion of small businesses throughout Nigeria.”
The former presidential candidate stressed that countries experiencing rapid economic growth have achieved success by prioritising small and medium-scale enterprises.
“It is clear that fostering a robust economy and generating employment, as evidenced by rapidly growing nations like China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, necessitates a concerted effort to prioritise support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises,” he said.
Obi further described MSMEs as the backbone of economic development, insisting that stronger investments and support systems are needed to unlock employment opportunities, especially in agriculture and manufacturing.
“As I have consistently asserted, our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) serve as the driving force behind economic growth, and it is imperative that we provide them with vigorous support to enhance development and create significant employment opportunities, particularly within the agriculture and manufacturing sectors,” Obi added.
He concluded on a hopeful note, saying, “A New and revitalised Nigeria is POssible.”
