Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh term in office, extending his nearly four-decade rule after winning January’s disputed presidential election.
The inauguration ceremony held at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala attracted thousands of supporters who gathered to witness the veteran leader take the oath of office.
According to Uganda’s Electoral Commission, Museveni secured 71.65 percent of the votes, while opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, polled 24.72 percent and rejected the outcome, alleging electoral fraud and ballot manipulation.
The election was overshadowed by reports of intimidation, arrests of opposition figures, and an internet shutdown that sparked concerns among observers about the credibility of the process. Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 after leading a rebel movement to power, continues to receive support from citizens who credit his administration with restoring stability and improving the economy despite growing criticism from opposition groups and human rights advocates.
