Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that he has been living with diabetes for more than four decades, attributing his ability to manage the condition successfully to a disciplined lifestyle centred on healthy eating, regular exercise and adequate rest.
Speaking during an interview on AIT News, the elder statesman explained that while some health conditions may not have a cure, they can often be controlled effectively through proper management and personal commitment.
“Most diseases that are not curable are manageable. I have a disease that is not curable yet, and that’s diabetes,” he said.
Obasanjo noted that receiving a diabetes diagnosis over 40 years ago did not stop him from maintaining an active life. According to him, consistency in following healthy habits has been key to keeping the condition under control.
“I’ve been diagnosed diabetic for more than 40 years. I still manage it. Well, what do I do?” he said.
The former president highlighted exercise as an essential part of his routine, revealing that he regularly plays squash whenever he is available.
“I play squash three times a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If I’m around. I watch what I eat. Diet can be exciting; it can be pleasurable. If you eat badly, then the consequence can also be bad on you. And then rest,” he added.
Obasanjo’s remarks underscore the importance of lifestyle choices in managing chronic health conditions, encouraging individuals living with similar illnesses to adopt healthy habits and remain committed to their overall wellbeing.
