Weapons recovered from the suspected IPOB terrorists
Security forces have uncovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition allegedly linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a joint operation in Enugu State.
The operation was carried out by troops of 82 Division Garrison under Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Enugu State Command, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle violent groups and strengthen security across the South-East.
Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Lt. Col. Ayeni said the breakthrough came on June 9, 2026, following intelligence obtained from suspects previously arrested over alleged involvement in IPOB and ESN activities.
He said security operatives acting on the information launched a follow-up operation in Gariki, Enugu South Local Government Area, where they uncovered a hidden arms depot inside a zinc structure disguised as a piggery.
During the search, troops recovered an assortment of weapons and ammunition, including General Purpose Machine Guns, an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, a tear gas gun with cartridges, AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
The military spokesman said the recovered weapons and suspects arrested in connection with the operation have been handed over to the DSS in Enugu for further investigation and possible prosecution.
He described the raid as a major outcome of intelligence-sharing among agencies operating in the region, noting that joint operations continue to disrupt criminal networks and armed groups threatening public safety.
He said Operation UDO KA would sustain pressure on violent elements and other groups seeking to undermine peace and stability in the South-East.
Residents were also urged to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing security operations and help prevent attacks.
Lt. Col. Ayeni reaffirmed the commitment of security forces to protecting lives, maintaining public safety and safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
