Zamfara State Police Command has thwarted a suspected terrorist attack after operatives discovered and safely neutralised an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along a major route in Tsafe Local Government Area.
The operation was carried out on Friday following intelligence reports received through community-based security engagements, according to a statement issued by the Command.
Police said the breakthrough occurred at about 4:15 p.m. along the Kunchin Kalgo axis when personnel of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), working alongside the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, responded to information about a suspicious object believed to have been planted by bandits.
Investigations revealed that the explosive device had been strategically positioned along the roadway, apparently with the intention of inflicting mass casualties on commuters and other road users.
Acting swiftly, the security team located the device, secured the area and carried out a controlled operation that led to its safe evacuation and destruction before any harm could occur.
The Command credited the success of the operation to timely intelligence provided by residents, noting that public cooperation remains vital in the fight against insecurity across the state.
Police authorities assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down those behind the failed plot and ensure they are brought to justice.
The Command also announced increased patrols and surveillance across identified flashpoints and vulnerable routes to prevent similar threats and enhance public safety.
Commissioner of Police A.M. Bello reaffirmed the Command’s determination to sustain pressure on criminal groups operating in the state, stressing that ongoing operations against banditry and other violent crimes would continue unabated.
Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies as part of collective efforts to safeguard lives and property.
