Former Senator Shehu Sani
Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani has dismissed calls for United States President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s electoral process, saying such efforts are unlikely to yield results.
Sani made the remarks in a post on his X account on Tuesday, apparently reacting to recent appeals urging Trump and the international community to pay attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
In the post, the former lawmaker argued that the U.S. president is preoccupied with major global security and domestic political issues and is unlikely to make African elections a priority.
“Those who are trying to drag Mr Trump into our elections are just wasting their time.
Drawing comparisons with previous U.S. administrations, Sani said Trump does not share the same level of interest in the conduct of elections in Africa.
“Trump is not Obama or Biden. He has least interest in the credibility or otherwise of elections in Africa.”
He cited elections in Tanzania, Uganda and Cameroon as examples to support his position.
Sani added that Trump is currently focused on pressing international crises, including tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, the war in Gaza and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as political battles at home.
“Mr Trump’s hands is full with Strait of Hormuz, Gaza and Ukraine; And most importantly, his party is battling to survive the upcoming Senate and House of Representatives elections.”
Sani’s comments come shortly after Nigerian music star Davido appealed to Trump and the international community to monitor the August 15 Osun governorship election, citing concerns over potential violence and the need to safeguard a free and fair electoral process.
