President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to move beyond remittances by investing in key sectors of the country’s economy.
The President made the appeal while declaring open the three-day Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026 in Toronto, Canada, where he was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
According to a statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Tinubu told participants, “Nigeria sees you. Nigeria values you. Nigeria needs you.”
He said Nigeria’s improving economic indicators, including stronger growth, lower inflation and increased foreign reserves, show that the country is on the path to recovery.
The President also noted that the International Monetary Fund projects Nigeria’s economy to grow by 4.1 per cent in 2026, while the World Bank has acknowledged progress in the country’s economic reforms.
Tinubu said the Federal Government is investing in roads, rail, power, healthcare, housing, agriculture and digital infrastructure to support economic growth.
He urged Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, technology, energy, housing, mining, education and manufacturing instead of relying only on sending money home.
The President encouraged diaspora communities to establish professionally managed investment groups and assured them that government initiatives are making it easier for Nigerians abroad to participate in the country’s financial system.
He also appealed for peace and national unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that political competition must never be allowed to threaten Nigeria’s stability.
