Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the killing of 32 residents of Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, describing the attack as another painful reminder of the worsening security situation in the country.
Reacting to the incident in a statement, Atiku expressed deep sympathy with the families of the victims and the people of Sokoto State, while praying for the repose of those who lost their lives.
“I am devastated by the killing of 32 innocent Nigerians in Ungushi community, Kebbe LGA of Sokoto State.”
He added: “My heart goes out to the bereaved families and the people of Sokoto State. May Allah forgive the departed and give their loved ones the strength to endure this unbearable loss.”
The former presidential candidate, however, insisted that expressions of sympathy alone were no longer sufficient in the face of repeated attacks on communities across the country.
“But condolences are no longer enough. How many more Nigerians must be slaughtered before this government treats the protection of human life as an emergency?”
According to him, the recurring killings across different parts of Nigeria demand urgent and decisive action from the authorities rather than routine official statements after every tragedy.
“These killings have become frighteningly recurrent, and a government that cannot protect its citizens must not become comfortable issuing statements after every massacre.”»
Atiku urged the Federal Government to adopt stronger security measures, including improved intelligence gathering, enhanced protection for vulnerable communities and ensuring those responsible for the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
“The Federal Government must move from condolences to action: strengthen intelligence, secure vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
He further stressed that safeguarding the lives of citizens remains the primary responsibility of any government.
“The first duty of government is to protect life. Nigerians cannot continue to bury their loved ones while those entrusted with their security offer excuses.”
The former vice president concluded by praying for peace in Sokoto State and across the country.
“May Allah comfort Sokoto and restore peace to our nation.”
