Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Jannik Sinner in a thrilling four-set battle on September 7, 2025, to claim the US Open title and reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, while former President Donald Trump’s appearance sparked a mixed reaction of boos and cheers from the New York crowd.
The 22-year-old Spaniard secured a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, earning his second US Open championship and sixth Grand Slam title, avenging his loss to Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
“I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more,” Sinner reflected after the match, which ended his 27-match winning streak at hard-court Grand Slams.
Alcaraz’s win marks his return to the top ranking for the first time since September 2023, halting Sinner’s reign.
The defeat also prolonged the Open era’s longest streak without a successful men’s US Open title defense, a feat last achieved by Roger Federer from 2004 to 2008.
The electric atmosphere at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was heightened by Trump’s presence, who waved to the crowd before the national anthem but faced louder boos when shown on the stadium’s screens later.
The final also drew a glittering array of celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Douglas, and Stephen Curry, adding to the event’s spectacle.
Alcaraz’s victory, celebrated with his signature intensity, underscored his dominance in a rivalry that has now seen him defeat Sinner in two of their three Grand Slam final encounters this year, including June’s French Open.
“This win means everything to me,” Alcaraz said, as he solidified his status as the sport’s leading star.
