Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has been cleared to participate in the forthcoming governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after successfully passing the party’s screening exercise.
The screening marks Kefas’ first official vetting by the APC since his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party in November last year.
The exercise took place at the Plateau State Governors’ Lodge as part of the APC’s nationwide screening process for aspirants seeking the party’s tickets ahead of future elections. Governor Kefas appeared before the panel alongside 17 other serving governors for credential verification and eligibility assessment.
At the end of the exercise, the governors were formally declared qualified to contest in the primaries and were invited to take a bow before the screening committee in a symbolic conclusion to the process.
Governor Kefas arrived at the venue with several top members of his administration and political allies, including the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Chief Barr. Gibon Kataps; the Commissioner for Information and Re-orientation, Barr. Zainab Jalingo; the Special Adviser on Political Matters, Prof. Josiah Sabo Kente; and the APC Deputy National Women Leader, Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, among others.
The Taraba APC governorship race is expected to be highly competitive, with Kefas facing strong contenders within the party. Other notable aspirants include former Minister of Works, Sambo Jaji; businessman and philanthropist, David Sabo Kente; and former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman.
Political observers say Kefas’ successful screening could strengthen his standing within the APC as the party prepares for what is shaping up to be a keenly contested governorship primary in Taraba State.
