The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewale Adebayo, has emphasized that democracy remains the best option for electing leaders despite its imperfections.
Speaking during a visit to MKO Abiola’s residence, Adebayo noted that democracy provides the fairest and surest way for the minority to have their say and the majority to have their way.
Adebayo acknowledged that Nigeria’s democracy may have fallen below expectations, but highlighted the importance of freedom of speech, association, and the right to elect leaders.
“Although the practice of democracy in our country may have fallen below the expectations of not a few, we take solace in the fact that we have freedom of speech and association and we elect our leaders fairly, even though not perfectly,” he said.
The SDP candidate urged public office holders to serve with humility, emphasizing that government is a place to serve citizens, not for personal gain or revenge.
“Government is not a place for revenge, personal reward, egoism, or aggrandisement. Rather, it is a place to serve the rest of the citizens,” Adebayo said.
Adebayo also stressed the importance of accountability, urging the electorate to hold leaders accountable for their actions.
“Poor governance can be challenged and changed through the ballot every four years,” he noted, emphasizing the power of the vote in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
