Desire – A Precious Gift (Part 1) By LINDA ASIMOLE ELLAH

are you a learner?

Have you thought about how true this is? That at every point in life, and at every moment of one’s life, a human being always desires something. Oh, have you watched a new born baby who has just popped out of the womb? The baby is generally keen on one thing – she needs food and so she is busy sucking the finger, crying or appears unsettled. He or she has a desire to eat.

An old woman who has achieved so much in life and has began enjoying the fruit of her labour still desires something. In fact, she is full of desires; she wants her grandchildren to come see her, she wants her children to be strong and excel in life; she wants the children to live in peace if and when she is gone, and so on. Even a thief who sets out into the night has a desire too.

Here, we are not focused on qualifying the desire as good or bad, right, or wrong, great or vain. We are just looking at desire as an existential reality of being a human being and the fact that this desire is a gift. And of course, the way a gift is used could either make it a blessing or a curse.

At this moment, pause and think: “What do you desire right now?” Right now, I desire to do a writeup that will add some value to your understanding of your desires. I desire to sow a word or an idea that brings more joy into your life. For me, life is about JOY, a joy that is self-defined (not dictated by others or by society) and that adds value to humanity.

Desire and Where You Are At

What you desire right now may or may not be related to what you are doing right now. You may be watching a movie and the uppermost desire on you mind is for your loved one to return home. Hence, you may not be able to judge a person’s desire directly from that which they are currently engaged in. The person’s wish and desire could be miles away from what you are observing.

That is why your place of desire is your one sacred place. It is not easily contested by another. You can take a horse to the river, but you cannot force it to drink water. Even though an external force or pressure may be leading you in a certain direction, what you really desire remains what is important to you. A person may be in prison but desire that he be set free and go back to his family. Or she may desire to get out and get revenge on someone out there. Your life is yours to decide through your desires and actions.

Want and Desire

What you want is what you desire. What you desire is what you want. This could be shaped, influenced, directed, guided or motivated by external factors, circumstances or pressures. The principal point is: Do you know what you want?

Sometimes deciding what you really want is not always simple. Not because it is not simple, but because our want is clouded by several considerations, thoughts, and emotions. There are the ifs and buts, and so we are not even sure of what we want, and not even clear what we desire. Yet, it is very important for your life that you know what you want and be clear to yourself on exactly what you desire.

Being able to reach this point concerning any issue, or around any circumstance means you are finally taking responsibility for your life, for your joy and for your own future. It means you have began telling yourself your own truth. It means you are beginning to look inward to what your own inner spirit is directing you to do and in going in the direction of your own purpose. So, in every circumstance, it is crucial that you know what you want and explore (even with the help of others) how to go about achieving it.

Conscious Awareness of Desire

We need to be consciously aware of the gift that being able to desire is. It asserts to you and reminds you of the unique individual that you are. It reminds you that you have your own mind to think and to want. The place of your desire is the space you have to create a world you think and believe can be yours. Therefore, use this gift consciously. Using this gift consciously means, intentionally desiring something which to you is valuable. We are told that if you want something to happen, then you need to desire it enough.

What You Desire, You Create

Yes, you literally create what you desire. But you need to desire it enough to create it. So, be aware of this inner power and use it creatively, with fun and to achieve your purpose. Since I became aware of this ability, I realized that many times, we human beings waste our moments of desire. How do I mean? In my understanding and experience, I realized that for every moment you focus or do not focus on something you really desire, you create or do not create that thing. Yes, read that statement again.

What happens with us is that our thoughts and desires are all over the place. It is distracted by non-essentials, by emotional backlogs, by what others think or what they could say, by what we see with our physical eyes and experience around us, and so we are filled with doubts, with ifs and with buts. In this way, the things we desire never really get to happen.

Whereas, if you develop the habit, mindset and attitude of knowing what you want and focusing on it, even at odd moments, you will be amazed how quickly the things you desire happen in your life. Do not get it wrong. When you focus on what you desire, you get ideas, ways and helps to achieve that thing and so it gets to happen. It does not happen just by desiring it and remaining passive about it. It is the strong desire you have for it that drives you towards the direction in which you can achieve it.

But again, you may not actively desire something, yet it happens to come your way. In my belief, I see this as a resulting effect of your past actions and unconscious intentions – unconscious desire. It did not just happen. An unconscious desire you had pulled it into your life. So, you would rather be actively conscious of what you want (to every extent you can) and so create the things you want purposefully.

If you desire something and believe you will get it, then know that it is already happening.
If you desire something and hope that you will get it, then know that it will likely happen slowly.
If you desire something and doubt that you will get it, then know that it is very likely not to happen at all.

Together We Can… Build the World We Want through Right Desire and Right Action!
So what YOU DESIRE and what YOU DO… Matters!
